Description

XPS Tile Backer Boards are manufactured using a high-density extruded polystyrene core with a polymer modified, glass fibre reinforced cement coating on both sides, adding rigidity and strength. The polystyrene core acts as an insulator, making the boards ideal for use with underfloor heating systems by reducing heat loss.

The glass fibre reinforced coating creates a smooth, extremely durable surface to easily accommodate the application of cementitious tile adhesives. XPS Tile Backer Boards are also suitable for exterior use. Additionally, XPS Tile Backer Boards are waterproof, offer dimensional stability (unlike plywood) and also provides excellent sound insulation.

Built for Energy Efficiency & Strength

Stop heating the ground and start heating your room. These XPS boards feature a high-density extruded polystyrene core sandwiched between two layers of polymer-modified, glass fibre reinforced cement. This "structural sandwich" design provides a rigid, waterproof base that reflects heat upwards, making your underfloor heating system up to 40% more efficient.

Words From Our Valued Clients

4.8/5

Faster heating installation

I laid the 10mm boards over my concrete subfloor before putting the heating mats down. The floor heats up in 20 minutes now instead of 2 hours. Incredible difference.

Mike D. (Heating Engineer)

Lightweight yet solid

Carrying a pack of these upstairs is a breeze compared to the heavy cement fibre boards. But once they are screwed down, they are just as rock solid.

Sarah L.

Easy to cut and install

You don't need a grinder or a saw. Just score it with a Stanley knife and snap it. No dust, no mess. Made fitting around the toilet pipe easy.

John T.

Perfect for shower cubicles

Used the 12mm on the walls of a shower cubicle. Totally waterproof and the tile adhesive grabs the cement coating instantly. A must-have for tanking.

Wetroom Design Ltd

Solves condensation issues

Used these on a cold external wall before tiling. Not only did it give me a flat surface, but the insulation stopped the condensation / mould issues we were having.

Emma R.

Better than plywood

I'll never use plywood for overboarding again. These don't rot, don't warp, and they insulate. Why would you use wood?

BuildSmart UK

Tough despite being foam

I was worried they would be soft because they are foam, but the cement coating makes them tough. Tiled over with large format porcelain and there's no movement.

P. Kenny

Better value than Wedi board

Compared to Wedi board, these are a fraction of the price and do exactly the same job. The mesh reinforcement is really strong.

T. Wright

Excellent for external cladding

Clad the outside of a garden bar with them. They take the weather well and render sticks to them perfectly.

Greg M.

Great for sound dampening

Put these down in an upstairs flat to dampen the footfall noise. The tenant below says it's made a noticeable difference.

L. Cole

Fast and secure installation

Used the metal washers and screws to fix them to a wooden floor. They bite in well and sit flush. Very fast installation.

Excellent packaging and delivery

Ordered 20 boards for a kitchen floor. Arrived next day in perfect condition. Corners were well protected.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you place heating mats directly onto concrete, the cold concrete sucks the heat away (downwards). XPS Insulation Boards act as a thermal barrier, forcing the heat upwards into your tiles. This speeds up warm-up times and significantly reduces electricity bills.

No. Cement Fibre Board is solid, heavy, and non-combustible, used mainly for structural strength. XPS Board is lightweight foam with a thin cement coating, designed primarily for insulation and waterproofing.

Yes. The extruded polystyrene core is closed-cell and 100% waterproof. It will not absorb water, making it ideal for wet rooms, steam rooms, and bathrooms.

On Timber: Use screws with metal washer discs to prevent the screw head pulling through the foam. On Concrete: Bed them down into a layer of flexible tile adhesive (like BritFlex S1).

Yes. The glass fibre reinforced cement coating creates a textured, durable surface specifically designed to anchor tile adhesive. No further priming is usually required.

6mm (TBB6): Best for floors where height is an issue (minimizes step up). 10mm (TBB10) / 12mm (TBB12): Best for walls or where greater insulation values are required. The thicker the board, the better the insulation.
